Some reviews from the former German Lieder Class
-
• It was interesting to learn the specifics of Schumann and Clara's situation. The picture of Clara's hand was very helpful to imagine how Clara is gifted. It was great to hear that story, how dangerous it was, a young woman at that era left her parents' home and went to Paris by herself. When I learned in the class about the detail of "The Walnut Tree", my image of the song changed from what I had thought before.

The lesson was full of many discoveries. First of all, when I have sung songs in the past, I have of course understood the meaning of the lyrics and thought I had some idea of the scene. However, I had never tried to interpret not only the original lyrics of the poet who wrote the lyrics, but also the thoughts, feelings, and background of the composer who chose the lyrics, so it was very interesting. I was also able to realize the importance of the method of translating the lyrics into singers mother tongue, deepening the interpretation in the native language, and then bringing it back to the original language. I realize that, until now I have been performing music not so detailed, but I hope to be able to sing with more visible images, so that I can convey the message of the song to the audience. Thank you very much.
